Read Aloud Parent Event Kits

Read aloud strategies for:

Reading fiction and nonfiction

Building background knowledge and vocabulary

Practicing asking and answering questions

Event Design:

The event is designed for a staff member to begin the session by modeling effective read aloud using the Heart and Hand modeling book and scripted guide card (staff should modify as needed). This should take about 10 minutes. Then staff will distribute copies of the book for the family read aloud and the family discussion cards. The remaining time is given for families to read this text together, using the guide card to practice stopping and asking/answering questions. Two sessions of this model give families exposure to four texts (in some kits it’s two due to length of book) on a topic. All grade level sessions included in your event take place simultaneously following a schedule. See sample schedule further down the page.
